We went to see it, both fell in love with it and I proceeded to buy every character in the film as toys for my son. This summer, shortly before my now 20 year old son jetted off to France for two months of study and travel, we went to see Toy Story 3. I truly enjoyed the film as did Ben and I of course cried.

If you don’t know me you might wonder what in the world I could find to cry about in an animated kids film. I tend to cry easily and often but the tear jerking-breakdown moment for me took place when Andy’s mom surveys his now vacant bedroom, just before he leaves for college. Emotions swept over me like a tidal wave as the scene unfolded, I relived every second of what that moment of separation felt like. I also marveled at how fast those 15 years flew by for me. If you are in the throes of child rearing and in despair over dirty diapers, projectile vomiting, homework, car pool, bullying and all the rest of it, cheer up, it’s over in the blink of an eye. It’s a relief to have those trying times behind me but it’s also sad in that I’ll never have those experiences again with my own child. Grandchildren are an entirely different affair. I was fully invested in the upbringing of my child. I worried about what kind of man he would become, if he would ever learn to ride a bike, shake hands, initiate conversations with strangers, and navigate the world without me. I’m so proud to say he turned out just fine with a whole lot of help from a large cast of family, friends and my wonderful, patient and understanding husband who became a step-father late in life and excelled at the job.

It was, most people agreed, the decent thing to do.

But that was then. Today, American workers face the worst job market since the Great Depression, with five job seekers for every job opening, with the average spell of unemployment now at 35 weeks. Yet the Senate went home for the holiday weekend without extending benefits. How was that possible?

The answer is that we’re facing a coalition of the heartless, the clueless and the confused. Nothing can be done about the first group, and probably not much about the second. But maybe it’s possible to clear up some of the confusion.

By the heartless, I mean Republicans who have made the cynical calculation that blocking anything President Obama tries to do — including, or perhaps especially, anything that might alleviate the nation’s economic pain — improves their chances in the midterm elections. Don’t pretend to be shocked: you know they’re out there, and make up a large share of the G.O.P. caucus.

Maybe there’s something in the water. Or perhaps it’s difficult to maintain marital unions in the state that invented nullification.

Nikki Haley, a 38-year-old candidate for the Republican gubernatorial nomination, has had an action-packed month. Sarah Palin endorsed her candidacy on the steps of the State House. She rocketed ahead in the polls. Then a blogger and former political consultant, Will Folks, claimed he’d had some sort of sexual relationship with her.

“If you were elected governor, do you think questions raised about your personal life would affect your ability to recruit jobs to South Carolina?” Haley was asked in a debate on Tuesday.

How fragile, fleeting and precious it is. A good friend’s husband is dying of brain cancer; another friend is in the end stages of a four year battle with lung cancer. It just seems so unfair when a good person’s life is cut short. Watching my friend struggle to comprehend her husband’s diagnosis is so painful. It literally hurts my heart to read her daily blog about his life and death struggle.

Oddly enough today when I spoke to my friend who has less than 6 months to live, he comforted me saying he was at peace. The blessing of impending death is the peace that settles over the patient once the fear abates and acceptance begins to take over. Death can be joyful at times, that sounds weird but it’s true.

Dr. Rekers said he hired the prostitute as a travel assistant for a trip to Europe after having had surgery. “I can’t lift luggage. That’s why I hired him,” Rekers said. Photographs of the two emerging from the airport, though, show Rekers pushing both their suitcases on a luggage cart. Rekers said he realized the man was a prostitute half way through his ten day vacation. Rekers sits on the board of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, an organization dedicated to changing the sexuality of gays and lesbians, and has authored books that describe homosexuality as a curable condition. Dr. Rekers has testified in Florida and Arkansas as an expert witness in favor of bans on gay adoption. His companion was identified as a 20 year-old Puerto Rican man whose description on RentBoy.com says he is “sensual,” “wild” and “up for anything.” He then lists “vanilla, leather … shaving [and] spanking” among his fetishes and stripping and go-go dancing among his talents.

Statements that President Obama is a “socialist” don’t fly with the Socialist Party, USA. Billy Wharton, the Socialist Party’s co-chair, says Obama is far from being a socialist, and that labeling Obama a socialist “clearly means that people don’t understand what socialism is.” Most socialists believe that consumers and workers affected by economic institutions should either own or control those institutions, but Democratic socialists are more interested in protecting ordinary people from unregulated capitalism through progressive taxation and regulation. Many institutions in the U.S. are already socialistic under that definition: Social Security, Medicare, unemployment benefits, public education and Pell grants for college students all have socialistic origins. Card-carrying Socialists scoff at the idea that the newly-passed health care reform is “socialized medicine.” They wanted national single-payer health insurance with a government option, but new law doesn’t have any of those features. Instead, it just strengthens private health insurance companies by delivering 32 million new customers while giving them no incentive to change, Wharton points out. Some point to the Wall Street bailout, actually started under the Bush administration, as socialist, but government failed to nationalize the troubled banks, instead just giving them money with few or no strings attached. And what about the bailout of the Detroit auto industry? Just having a stake in it doesn’t make it socialist, according to Frank Llewellyn, national director of the Democratic Socialists of America, “If that was true, you would say that we have a socialist army. The government owns the army.” Obama is “trying to save capitalism from itself,” not trying to change into a new system, Llewellyn says.

I look forward to the state party convention each year as a chance to commune with progressives, review our slate of candidates and generally get politically fired up. This year was no exception. The ride down to Columbia gave me a chance to learn more about my lovely and talented friend and we both enjoyed the barbeque stump meeting and gubernatorial debate which followed the general convention.

Although the turnout was a bit smaller than in years past the crowd was diverse and enthusiastic. US Congressman John Spratt said the crowd looked like South Carolina and I would agree, young and old, black, white and brown. We were united in our support for our President and our party and that’s a powerful feeling.
