Listen to the music
On Saturday night Alan and I drove to Atlanta to attend a concert in the Chastain Park Ampitheatre. Michael Franti and Spearhead opened for Steve Winwood. This was our second concert in Chastain Park, last year we saw Jackson Browne which was amazing. The weather was picture perfect and as the sun set we munched on mufelletta’s and salad, while sipping wine. It was the yuppiest crowd I’ve been with in quite some time, lots of people dressed to the nines, their table settings featured fresh flowers, crystal and lots of gourmet take-out. Michael Franti and his band brought the crowd to their feet, wading into the seats, sipping beers, shaking hands, taking pictures with his new fans. He told stories, prompted concert goers to sing along and created an atmosphere of sheer joy. Winwood was in fine voice, a far more subtle and disengaged performance but the quality of his musicians and the level of talent on the stage made up for his cool demeanor.
Ken Ard-The Gomer Pyle of SC Politics
After first ignoring then dragging their feet on the criminal investigation of Lt. Governor Ken Ard for more than a year, the Republican Party dispatched the entire messy matter on one day. Ard resigned from his post the morning of March 9th, was indicted by the grand jury at 1pm and pleaded guilty at 3pm. By Saturday, the SC GOP leadership had elevated Sen. Glenn McConnell from Senate pro tem to Lt. Governor as required by the state constitution. During Ard’s sentencing hearing, tearful character witnesses including a judge who referred to the 45 year old Ard as a “young man” pleaded for leniency and were successful, Ard was convicted of multiple counts of ethics violations but received no jail time, instead he was placed on 5 years probation, given a fine and community service.
A Question of Choice
This past year Democratic Women of South Carolina has partnered with Young Democrats of Furman on several events including the recent visit by attorney Sarah Weddington. Weddington served as the lead attorney for Roe v. Wade. She argued the case before the United States Supreme Court in 1973, when she was 26 years old. I had the opportunity to hear Weddington speak for the first time at Converse College in 1993. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to spend some time with Dr. Weddington during her recent visit to Furman University on February 28th. Dr. Weddington recounts her journey to a place in legal history in her best selling book, “A Question of Choice.”
